When Do Most Car Accidents Happen in Phoenix? The Data Tells All

Car Accidents

We analyzed 379,090 traffic accident records from the Phoenix Police Department — every traffic-related call for service from 2018 through 2025. The data reveals clear patterns in when and how Phoenix car accidents happen. If you drive in Phoenix, these numbers should change how you think about your commute.

When Do Most Phoenix Accidents Happen - Day and Time Analysis

The Deadliest Day: Friday

Friday is the most dangerous day to drive in Phoenix. Our data shows a consistent spike in accidents every Friday, peaking in the late afternoon. Saturday is the second most dangerous, driven by nighttime DUI-related crashes. Sunday and Monday are the safest — though “safe” is relative when you’re talking about 47,000 accidents per year.

The Deadliest Time: 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

The afternoon rush hour window of 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM produces more accidents than any other three-hour block. This is when traffic volume peaks, impatience is highest, the sun angle creates glare on west-facing roads, school zones are active with children, and cumulative fatigue from the workday reduces reaction times.

The combination of Friday + 3–6 PM is the single most dangerous time to be on Phoenix roads.

A Second Spike: Late Night

There’s a second, smaller spike between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights. These crashes are disproportionately DUI-related and tend to be more severe — higher speeds, less traffic (meaning higher individual speeds), and impaired drivers who fail to brake or take evasive action.

Accident Categories in Phoenix

Our Phoenix PD data breaks down by type:

  • 297,810 general traffic accidents — the bulk of the total
  • 79,651 injury accidents — roughly 21% of all accidents result in reported injuries
  • 1,155 fatal accidents — approximately 144 per year
  • 474 DUI-related accidents — the ones that were specifically flagged, though the true number involving impairment is certainly higher

What About Hit-and-Runs?

The data reveals a staggering number: approximately 20,000 hit-and-run incidents per year in Phoenix — nearly half of all traffic accidents. This is an epidemic. If you’re the victim of a hit-and-run, UIM coverage may be your only path to compensation if the driver is never found.

Seasonal Patterns

Accident rates spike during monsoon season (June through September) when sudden storms catch drivers off guard, the winter holiday season (November through January) when DUI rates increase, and back-to-school periods when traffic patterns shift and more pedestrians and cyclists are on the road.

Maricopa County’s Fatal Crash Trend

Zooming out to the county level, our FARS analysis shows a disturbing trend. Maricopa County fatal crashes from 2015 to 2022:

  • 2015: 371 fatal crashes
  • 2016: 427 fatal crashes
  • 2017: 445 fatal crashes
  • 2018: 482 fatal crashes
  • 2019: 445 fatal crashes
  • 2020: 513 fatal crashes
  • 2021: 561 fatal crashes
  • 2022: 557 fatal crashes

That’s a 67% increase from 2015 to 2022. Phoenix is growing fast, but fatalities are growing faster than population. More cars, more miles driven, more speed, more distraction, more deaths.

How This Data Helps Your Case

Knowing when and where accidents happen isn’t just interesting — it’s useful in litigation. If you were rear-ended at 4:30 PM on a Friday on Indian School Road, we can show the jury that this is statistically one of the most dangerous places and times to drive in the entire city. It establishes that the risk was foreseeable — and that a reasonably prudent driver should have been even more cautious in those conditions.

No other firm in Phoenix has this data. The Law Badgers built this analysis from scratch because we believe in preparation that goes beyond the basics.

Protect Yourself

Drive defensively during Friday afternoon rush hour. Be extra cautious between 3–6 PM. Avoid the deadliest corridors if you have alternatives. And always carry adequate UIM coverage — because in a city with 47,000 accidents per year, the question isn’t if you’ll be near one, but when.
