Spring Training Traffic in Phoenix — More Cars, More Crashes
Every February and March, the Cactus League brings millions of baseball fans to the Phoenix metro for spring training. Fifteen MLB teams play across 10 stadiums scattered throughout the Valley — from Peoria to Mesa, Scottsdale to Goodyear. That means a massive influx of rental cars driven by visitors unfamiliar with Phoenix roads, increased traffic around stadiums during game times, more alcohol consumption at and after games, and more rideshare activity around stadium areas.
The Impact on Accident Rates
The combination of unfamiliar drivers, stadium traffic, and post-game drinking creates predictable spikes in accidents near spring training venues. Scottsdale Stadium, Salt River Fields, Surprise Stadium, and Camelback Ranch all sit on or near major arterials that are already among the most dangerous in the metro.
Our crash data shows the 3–6 PM window is the deadliest time on Phoenix roads — and that’s exactly when afternoon spring training games let out, dumping thousands of additional vehicles onto already-congested roads.
Out-of-State Drivers and Insurance
If you’re hit by an out-of-state driver visiting for spring training, you can still file a claim. Arizona courts have jurisdiction over accidents that occur within the state, regardless of where the at-fault driver lives. Their home-state insurance policy covers the claim.
If the visiting driver has inadequate coverage — or if they’re driving a rental car with unclear insurance — the situation gets complicated. UIM coverage on your own policy becomes critical.
Enjoy the Games Safely
Take rideshare to and from games if you’re drinking. Be patient in stadium traffic — aggressive driving in crowded parking lots causes more accidents than you’d think. And watch for pedestrians — thousands of fans walk to and from stadiums, often crossing busy streets.
