Personal Injury

Placing a loved one in a nursing home is one of the hardest decisions a family makes. Discovering that your loved one is being abused or neglected there is devastating. Arizona law provides strong protections — but families need to know the warning signs and their legal options.

Warning Signs of Abuse

Physical abuse: Unexplained bruises, fractures, burns, or welts. Injuries in unusual locations (upper arms, inner thighs). Fear of certain staff members.

Neglect: Bedsores (pressure ulcers), dehydration, malnutrition, weight loss, soiled bedding or clothing, untreated infections, and medication errors.

Emotional abuse: Withdrawal, depression, agitation, fearfulness, or sudden behavioral changes.

Financial exploitation: Unexplained changes to wills or powers of attorney, missing personal property, or unusual bank account activity.

Arizona Law

Arizona’s Adult Protective Services Act and the Vulnerable Adults statutes provide civil and criminal remedies for nursing home abuse. Facilities are required to maintain adequate staffing, provide appropriate medical care, protect residents from harm, and report suspected abuse.

If your loved one has been harmed, you can file a personal injury or wrongful death claim against the facility. These cases often reveal systemic problems — understaffing, inadequate training, failure to screen employees, or patterns of abuse that the facility ignored.

Reporting

Report suspected nursing home abuse to Arizona Adult Protective Services (APS) at 1-877-767-2385 and to the facility’s licensing authority. Then contact an attorney.
