Safety

It’s back-to-school time. Daily routines are changing. Kids are out and about — walking to and from school, gathering at bus stops, riding bikes, playing sports. It’s time for all of us to refocus on safety.

School Zone Laws in Arizona

Under A.R.S. § 28-797, the speed limit in a school zone is 15 mph when the posted school zone signs are flashing or when children are present. Violations carry enhanced fines and can contribute to a negligence claim if a child is struck.

Arizona law also requires drivers to stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children. When the bus has its red lights flashing and stop sign arm extended, all traffic in both directions must stop — unless there’s a physical median separating the lanes.

Pedestrian Accidents Involving Children

Children are unpredictable. They dart into streets, don’t always use crosswalks, and are harder to see — especially between parked cars. Drivers must exercise heightened caution in residential areas and near schools, parks, and playgrounds.

If your child has been injured by a negligent driver near a school zone, bus stop, or residential area, the driver’s failure to exercise appropriate care is strong evidence of negligence. For children, the statute of limitations is tolled (paused) until the child turns 18 — but evidence still degrades, so don’t wait to consult an attorney.

Reminders for Drivers

Slow down in school zones. Stop for school buses — no exceptions. Watch for children at intersections and mid-block crossings. Put your phone down — distracted driving near schools is inexcusable. Be extra cautious during the first few weeks of school when kids are still adjusting to new routes.
