Online Injury Calculators Are Garbage — Here's Why

Personal Injury

You’ve probably seen the ads: “Calculate your settlement in 60 seconds!” You plug in a few numbers, and a website spits out a dollar figure. These tools are everywhere. And they’re worthless.

Why They Don’t Work

Personal injury case value depends on dozens of factors that no online form captures. The severity and permanence of your specific injury, the quality and consistency of your medical treatment, which doctors treated you and what they documented, the specific insurance policies involved, whether comparative fault is an issue, the county where the case would be tried (jury pools vary dramatically), whether the defendant’s conduct was egregious enough for punitive damages, and your credibility as a witness.

An online calculator can’t evaluate any of this. What it CAN do is collect your contact information and sell it to law firms as a lead. That’s the entire business model.

The Multiplier Myth

Many calculators use a simple formula: multiply your medical bills by 2–5x to get your case value. This is an outdated oversimplification that insurance companies abandoned decades ago. A $10,000 medical bill for a fully recovered soft tissue injury is worth far less than a $10,000 bill for a surgery that resulted in permanent nerve damage.

What Actually Determines Value

The honest framework: what are your total damages — economic and non-economic? What’s the strength of your liability case? What insurance coverage is available? And what would a Maricopa County jury likely award?

That analysis requires an experienced attorney reviewing your specific facts. Not a website. The Law Badgers provide free, honest case evaluations — call (833) DTF-IGHT.
